Durante mi estadía de cinco meses en el Círculo Polar Ártico en la Laponia sueca en Särkimukka entre Diciembre del año 2019 y Mayo de 2020, hice realidad mi sueño de poder ver a las auroras boreales o «northern lights» en inglés.
During my five-month stay in the Arctic Circle in the Swedish Lapland in Särkimukka between December 2019 and May 2020, I made my dream of being able to see the Northern Lights come true.
Llegué allí por esas cosas del destino.
Era Octubre de 2019, yo estaba en Gotemburgo sin trabajo y desmotivado porque el trabajo en cocina me tenía cansado y porque además había intentado trabajar de mago y tampoco me había resultado bien. Sí, de mago. Había trabajado de esto anteriormente en Uruguay y Nueva Zelanda pero en Suecia no funcionó.
I got there because of those things of destiny.
It was October 2019, I was in Gothenburg without work and unmotivated because I was tired of working in the kitchen and because I had also tried to work as a magician and it had not turned out well either. Yes, as a magician. I had worked on this before in Uruguay and New Zealand but in Sweden it did not work.
Un día me llega un e-mail de una empresa del norte de Suecia que tiene restaurante, bar y hotel y que ofrece paseos guiados por perros huskies, tours en motos de nieve, y la posibilidad de ver auroras boreales (entre otros servicios) llamada Explore the North a la que yo había aplicado un mes antes en su página web buscando trabajo, pero en ese momento respondieron a mi solicitud comentándome que no necesitaban a nadie.
Resulta que un mes después alguien fue despedido por mal comportamiento, y un muchacho argentino que yo había conocido en Gotemburgo llamado Eric estaba trabajando en una sucursal de esta compañía y entonces le comentó al encargado de selección de personal sobre mí, y así fue como esta persona se volvió a contactar conmigo para preguntarme si yo todavía continuaba con mi búsqueda laboral. A lo que respondí que sí, por supuesto. Tuvimos una conversación por teléfono en la cual solucionamos los detalles, me enviaron un e-mail con más detalles y recomendaciones, y a los pocos días me tomé un tren desde Gotemburgo hasta la capital sueca Estocolmo, en donde me tomé un tren de 19 hs! Hasta Kiruna, ciudad desde la cual tenía dos horas más en auto hasta mi destino final y en donde pasaría el invierno sueco y en donde se haría realidad mi sueño de ver las auroras boreales: Särkimukka.
One day I received an e-mail from a company in northern Sweden that has a restaurant, bar and hotel that offers guided walks by huskies, snowmobile tours, and the possibility of seeing the Northern Lights (among other services) called Explore the North to which I had applied a month before on their website looking for work, but at that time they responded to my application by commenting that they did not need anyone. It turns out that a month later someone was fired for bad behavior, and an Argentine boy that I had met in Gothenburg named Eric was working in a branch of this company and then he told the recruiter about me, and that is how this person contacted me again to ask me if I was still continuing with my job search. To which I answered yes, of course. We had a phone conversation in which we solved out the details, they sent me an e-mail with more details and recommendations, and a few days later I took a train from Gothenburg to the Swedish capital Stockholm, where I took a 19 hous train! to Kiruna, a city from which I had two more hours by car to my final destination and where I would spend the Swedish winter and I would finally made true my dream to see the Northern Lights: Särkimukka.

From now, allow me to take you to this magic place.
Estamos en invierno. Afuera están los árboles, el suelo, y los techos cubiertos de nieve y la temperatura promedio oscila entre los -15 y los -30 grados, hace mucho frío y antes de salir de nuestra cabaña nos tenemos que abrigar bastante; camperas, guantes, pantalones, botas y todo lo necesario.
Este es un factor indispensable para poder ver las auroras: el frío.
We are in winter. Outside are the trees, the ground, and the roofs covered with snow and the average temperature ranges between -15 and -30 degrees, it is very cold and before leaving our cabin we have to shelter us quite a bit; jackets, gloves, pants, boots and everything we need.
This is an essential factor to be able to see the Northern Lights: the cold.
En segundo lugar, el cielo está despejado y esto es fundamental, ya que si está nublado las mismas nubes nos tapan a las auroras y no podemos verlas. El cielo es un espectáculo maravilloso; las estrellas brillan en el firmamento y este paisaje nocturno es simplemente hermoso. Para quienes alguna vez hayan ido al Cabo Polonio (Uruguay) y hayan visto su cielo en una noche despejada, pueden imaginarse de qué estoy hablando.
Second, the sky is clear and this is essential, since if it is cloudy the same clouds cover the northern lights and we cannot see them. Heaven is a wonderful sight; the stars are shining in the sky and this night landscape is merely beautiful. For those of you who have ever been to Cabo Polonio (Uruguay) and seen its sky on a clear night, you can imagine what I am talking about.
Ahora llegan las verdaderas protagonistas de la historia: las auroras boreales.
Lentamente, vamos observando que desde el horizonte, y en forma de fuegos de color verde oscuro que se envuelven a sí mismos, se van expandiendo cada vez más hacia arriba hasta alcanzar el límite de la panorámica visual estas llamas verdes que son tal vez el espectáculo más maravilloso que nos pueda entregar la madre naturaleza. También pueden imaginarlas como serpentinas onduladas, que continúan bailando hasta que las perdemos de vista, inclusive en ocasiones también pueden tener forma de arcoíris, como un gran arco que se expande desde el confín y alcanza cada vez más altura, hasta quedar encima de nuestras cabezas; a veces nos obliga a arquear nuestro cuello, porque dichas formaciones llegan hasta lo más alto del firmamento y la sensación de que ahí está ocurriendo algo que es mucho más fuerte y grande que nosotros nos domina por completo, y solo nos queda apreciar la majestuosidad de lo que estamos viendo y agradecer que estamos vivos y con salud para vivir este momento.
Las estrellas, principales recibidoras de elogios hasta este momento, quedan a un lado y pasan a un segundo plano para transformarse en un adorno de esta fabulosa bóveda nocturna llamada cielo.
Vienen desde el Norte, y si las condiciones se dan, las vemos vibrando y moviéndose onduladamente hacia su derecha, hasta ocupar todo el cielo o una gran parte del mismo.
Now come the true protagonists of the story: the Northern Lights.
Slowly, we are observing that from the horizon, and in the form of dark green fires that wrap themselves, get expanded more and more upwards until reaching the limit of the visual panoramic these green flames which are perhaps the most wonderful spectacle that Mother Nature can give us. You can also imagine them as wavy streamers, which continue dancing until we lose sight of them, in ocassions they can even have the shape of a rainbow, like a huge arc that expands from the edge and gets higher and higher, until it is above our heads; sometimes it forces us to arch our necks, because these formations reach the highest point of the sky and the feeling that there is something going on that is much stronger and greater than us completely dominate us, and we can only appreciate the majesty of what we are seeing and to be thankful that we are alive and healthy to live this moment. The stars, the main recipients of compliments up to this moment, are left to one side and take a back seat to become an adornment of this fabulous night vault called sky.
They come from the North, and if the conditions are met, we see them vibrating and moving undulating to their right, until they occupy the whole sky or a large part of it.
Depende del clima también la cantidad de tiempo que vemos a las auroras. Pueden estar un par de minutos danzando cada una, o bailar por unos pocos segundos hasta desaparecer del firmamento. Duraderas o efímeras, son igualmente hermosas.
También se pueden ver de color azul, blanco, violeta, amarillo, rojo o rosado, aunque normalmente el color predominante es ese verde oscuro intenso.
It also depends on the weather how long we see the auroras. They can spend a couple of minutes dancing each, or dance for a few seconds until they disappear from the firmament. Durable or ephemeral, they are just as beautiful.
They can also be seen in blue, white, purple, yellow, red or pink, although normally the predominant color is that intense dark green.
Luego de un rato de verlas danzar en el cielo y de observar como lentamente siguen su curso más hacia el noroeste, nuestras manos están casi congeladas de sacar fotos y nuestros cuerpos piden calor, pero nos damos un último momento para volver a contemplar la belleza de la naturaleza, y comprender lo afortunados que somos de poder ser testigos de algo tan maravilloso.
After a while of watching them dance in the sky and observing how they slowly continue their course further to the northwest, our hands are almost frozen from taking photos and our bodies ask for warmth, but we give ourselves one last moment to contemplate the beauty of nature, and to understand how lucky we are to be able to witness something so wonderful.
En este momento volvemos a entrar al Lodge, nos tomamos un café (con chocolate o sin), comentamos nuestra experiencia, y nos compartimos las fotos que tenemos de ese momento que quedará guardado para siempre en nuestras retinas.
At this moment we re-enter the Lodge, we have a coffee (with or without chocolate), we comment on our experience, and we share the photos we have of that moment that will be saved forever in our retinas.
